Everyone goes on about that fresh, musky-sweet fragrance all new babies have. I always thought it was probably just the gentle scent of baby wipes, talc and baby baths, but it turns out I’m wrong – there really is such a thing as baby smell, and mums are programmed to love it!
According to a study conducted in 2013, researchers discovered there’s a response in the pleasure centre of the brain that’s caused by the new baby smell. Though they weren’t certain what causes the smell (most likely vernix and amniotic fluid), they were sure of the result – mums feel the need to be close to their babies.
It’s another way of making sure our babies are hugged, fed and protected, courtesy of Mother Nature. The benefits of hugging and holding our tiny babies are well documented, and it’s also interesting that in a world where body odour is something we’re all trying to cover up, baby smell is one of the most important parts of the mother-baby bonding experience, and something we all seem to notice and love – even dads.
Now how surprising would it be to discover that a company has tried reproducing that new baby fragrance? Well if you’ve ever heard of American perfume company Demeter, you won’t be surprised at all.
Demeter don’t go in for the standard types of perfume. They like to recreate the smells of everyday things. For example, how about ‘Kitten Fur’? Or for something with more grit, you could always give ‘Dirt’ a go! Apparently it really smells of dirt. Or you may prefer ‘Fiery Curry’ or ‘Lobster’.
All very tempting! We’d like to give ‘New Baby’ a go, but sadly we haven’t had a sniff yet. According to the website blurb, it took them 15 years to create the fragrance, and has a light, bright, transparent and sheer fragrance, with slight lemony touches and an underlying creaminess.
Sounds yummy! We read a review of it by a fashion blogger. Apparently her friends thought it was light and sexy, with a summery feel. Probably not what Demeter were aiming for, but we’re still curious.
If Demeter are paying attention, I’d love a sample! With a bit of luck it’ll make my wife desperate to feed me, then tuck me in for a lovely sleep. I’ll let you know if it works!
